Hello again! It’s September, already, again. I am never not in awe of the passage of time; the onward march of the seasons always catches me off-guard. This is an ongoing theme on this newsletter… thinking about death, just like Barbie… no sense of existential dread at all, why do you ask⁉️ 🥴🙃
Anyway! Planning for QUEERIES: Designing Reality Equitably and Madly has commenced, and I’m very excited for it all to come together. (If you have no idea what I’m talking about or need a refresher, read the previous issue of Queeries!)
As this is a queer exhibition about queer design, I’ve taken an understandably queer approach to gathering data, generating displays for the gallery walls, and making this project as accessible as possible to queer folks in New York City. In addition to spotlighting ongoing queer design initiatives in the city that spotlight queer history, community, and activism, I want to install on the walls actual ideas, thoughts, concepts, and stories of everyday queer people to insert them into “mainstream” architectural narratives—to show that queer critical and speculative imaginations required to trouble the status quo already exist, and are manifested in queer notions of home and family.
How will this happen? In two parts: 1) queer folks (like you!) take the survey about your personal, queer perspectives on home, which will 2) inform in-person (and possibly virtual) storytelling / show & tell salons (DREAMshops⁉️) that will generate images and words to add to the gallery - which you are all invited to! In this way, the exhibition, which will be on view from mid-November 2023 to mid-March 2024, will grow over time and become a living archive of queer spatial thoughts.
Because this exhibition will be at the NYC Center for Architecture, it will be focused on the New York City Metropolitan Area, so if you live in a different city you will not be able to take the survey. BUTTTTT you should start the survey anyway if you’re interested - you’ll get questions about where you’re located - wouldn’t it be awesome to have this kind of exhibition in your city⁉️⁉️⁉️
The survey will take ~10-20 minutes to complete, depending on how detailed you want to be. You can always come back and finish the survey later :)
